OUR STORY
The founders of Heirloom Foods have been collecting interesting varieties of seed from around the world for more than a decade. Many of these varieties of fruits, vegetables and plants are noticeably different from what is available in local markets and stores. No poisons or chemical pesticides are used making Heirloom Foods one of the few truly natural and organic growers in South Africa.
There are various methods that can be used to grow food organically. Some of those methods may not use poisons but may still affect the microbiome of the soil and therefore the plants ability to nourish the human microbiome. The prevalence of disease is directly linked to how human beings grow food. Farming methods MUST change if we want to sustainably feed the worlds population. Dr Zack Bush explains the situation in the video link below. It is possibly the most important message for our generation.
Another weakness that Heirloom Foods aims to correct is related to the logistics of food distribution. While we do cooperate with some organic farmers outside of the Benoni area this is only for crops that cannot easily be grown here. (e.g. Bananas and Citrus). South Africans do not need to eat Spanish strawberries and Europe also does not need South African Fruit. Complicated food chains are fragile and can make communities unnecessarily vulnerable.
To succeed in these noble endeavor's we need your support. We know that it is easier to shop for meat, veg, dairy and toothpaste in one go whether this be online or in store. It will take a few addition minutes to log on and order your fresh produce separately. Those that have made the effort will testify to the fact that it is worth the bandwidth.
When you confirm your online order the produce you are ordering is still, in most instances on the plant or in the ground. We recommend that you click and collect or click for delivery if you are in a rush. Ordering at the farm shop takes longer but is a pleasant outing as you get to see the pickers going to harvest your produce.
