The Story Behind Heirloom Foods
The founders of Heirloom Foods had been collecting heirloom seed varieties for years before the COVID lockdowns began. When the shelves of grocery stores suddenly showed gaps and variety disappeared, the fragility of both international and local food systems became impossible to ignore.
At the same time, conventional business slowed. With unexpected time available, the founders chose to act—turning years of curiosity and research into practice.
They had long believed it was possible to grow food without chemical fertilisers or herbicides at scale. Despite being told by experienced farmers that such an approach wasn’t viable, the challenge only strengthened their resolve.
Ancient farming methods were revisited and tested. Conventional advice often proved ineffective or contradictory, so the plants themselves became the most trusted guide—signalling health or distress with clarity.
Looking beyond what the human eye can see, the founders explored the microscopic world beneath the soil. The activity of nematodes, protozoa, and countless other organisms revealed a deeper truth: soil life is the foundation of plant health.
Composting systems, worm farms, and microbial cultivation through aerated “bubble tanks” were introduced. The results were undeniable. Crops once burdened by pests such as aphids recovered within weeks, restoring their natural resilience through improved soil vitality.
What began as a side project soon evolved into a full-time pursuit. Disillusioned with conventional career paths, the next generation committed to a different journey—one rooted in learning, experimentation, and a return to natural systems.
The path has not been without challenges. Growing organically was only the first obstacle. While customers appreciated the idea of organic produce, many still defaulted to the convenience of traditional retail. This led to a shift in thinking. The distribution model had to change—bringing farmers closer to like-minded retailers and consumers who value quality, transparency, and sustainability.
Today, Heirloom Foods stands at the forefront of a movement to restore truly healthy produce to South African tables. By working with farmers across the country, providing training, and creating viable routes to market, the mission is simple: Rebuild the connection between soil, food, and human health—one farm at a time.
